Winery list for Beaujolais
There are 12,889 acres/5,216 ha of vinevards exclusively dedicated to regional Beaujolais production. The zone of production is split into two distinct zones:
Southern Beaujolais: the entire area south of the Nizer- and River.
Northern Beaujolais: a band of contiguous vineyards running north from Villefranche-sur-Saône to the vil- lage of St. Amour. (St. Amour lies just 1.8 miles/3 km south of the Mlâconnais town of St. Véran.)
Ninety-nine percent of this production is red. By law, red and rosé Beaujolais can include up to 15% of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aligoté, Pinot Gris and Melon when these secondary grapes exist as a field blend. In reality, however, the wines are almost always 100% Gamay.
Red Beaujolais displays a fresh overt grapiness and is characterized by light pigment, light tannins and bright acidity. Look for aromas of banana, cranberry, raspberry and cherry.
White Beaujolais is mostly unoaked, fresh and vibrant with bright apple acidity.
In Beaujolais, as in Macon, producers can also add the name of the actual village/commune to the general AOC. In Beaujolais, there are 30 villages granted this license.
